SOLGAR Astaxanthin Complex 4mg 60 Softgels

Leonia, N.J. - (November 6, 2001) – Solgar Vitamin and Herb proudly introduces a powerful new antioxidant, Astaxanthin (As-te-zan-thin) Complex Softgels, to its quality line of premium natural health products. Astaxanthin is one of the most versatile natural antioxidants in the body. Highly potent in its own right, it may also maximize the body’s use of carotenoids and vitamin E. Astaxanthin may also enhance the skin’s natural protection.*

Solgar’s Astaxanthin is a high-performance carotenoid harvested from microalgae grown off the Hawaiian coast. This microalgae provides the most concentrated source of Astaxanthin known, delivering 10,000 - 40,000 mg/kg.

"Compared to many popular antioxidants, Astaxanthin has more applications, greater antioxidant efficacy, and the ability to enhance the activity of other antioxidants and carotenoids," said Ed Lemmo, Ph.D., R.D., CDN Vice President, Product Development, Solgar Vitamin and Herb.

Laboratory studies reveal that Astaxanthin is more effective than vitamins A and E and traditional carotenoids like lutein and beta-carotene in scavenging damaging oxidants. In one in vitro study, the effective dose of Astaxanthin was 100 times lower than that of vitamin E and beta-carotene.

The unique structure of Astaxanthin allows it to exist in both lipid and aqueous environments. As a result, Astaxanthin is a far-reaching antioxidant, active in all parts of the body. In addition to its high potency as an antioxidant, Astaxanthin may help the body maximize its use of other antioxidants, prolonging the functional life of vitamin E, beta-carotene, lycopene and glutathione by switching them back "on" after they’ve become spent.

Research shows that Astaxanthin may also enhance the skin’s natural protection by acting like vitamin A, which accumulates in the skin and decreases the production of free radicals, which can lead to tissue and DNA damage.*

Solgar’s Astaxanthin Complex contains 3.4 mg of Astaxanthin per softgel, as well as small amounts of lutein, beta-carotene and canthaxanthin. These other carotenoids are also naturally present in the microalgae H. pluvialis, and are brought along with Astaxanthin in the extraction process. One softgel is recommended as a daily dose. Solgar’s Astaxanthin Complex Softgels are free of corn, yeast, wheat and dairy products and are formulated without the use of preservatives, artificial flavors or colors.

Founded in 1947, Solgar Vitamin and Herb is a leading authority in nutritional science, technology and education. Solgar is an operating unit under American Home Products Corporation’s (NYSE:AHP) Whitehall-Robins Healthcare Division, a maker of a broad range of consumer health products.
