Today there are many of us slowly getting out
of bed, just putting our feet on the ground, while others are already outside
enjoying the morning sunshine! Your neighbor, your boss, people across the
world, they're getting a head start on the day before you. And what are they
doing at the park, in the courtyard, or even on their back porch? They can be
seen performing the slow, graceful movements of Tai Chi Chuan. A Chinese martial
art with a long and rich history. Tai Chi is helping these people arise with a
new healthy outlook for everyday!
But what is Tai Chi anyway? It is an exercise system that reduces stress and
improves circulation. It's also an ancient martial art that can be used for
self-defense. Today Tai Chi is viewed by many people as a gentle, low-impact
system of exercises, also a system of fighting, which uses a technique called
"pushing hands," and even weapons, like swords and spears!
Tai Chi was originated in China. It's considered to be the ultimate
"soft" martial art. The name "Tai Chi" can mean several
things, "the fist way" and "grand ultimate truth." Tai Chi
is based on beautiful circular, flowing movements which can benefit the
cardiovascular system. This in return improves your flexibility, reduces stress
and stimulates the flow of "Chi," the life-force in our bodies.
As an exercise, Tai Chi does not require the physical demands of Kung Fu, or
other martial arts. As with any exercise, cautions still must be taken. Its
highly recommended that older people, and other individuals with chronic
conditions consult with their physician before starting a regular routine of Tai
Chi.
